Cross Country Takes Fifth Place at 2010 Seven Sisters Championship

Cross Country POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (Oct. 16, 2010) – The Mount Holyoke College women's cross country team grabbed fifth place at the 29th annual Seven Sisters Championship today in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Host Vassar College narrowly edged out Wellesley College for its first ever team title.

Mount Holyoke was paced by senior Rebecca Engell, who finished the 5,000 meter course in 19:58 to take 15th place overall. First year Lucia Garcia crossed the line in 20:50 to secure 37th place, while sophomore Elizabeth MacLauchlan chipped in with a 44th place performance (21:10).

Vassar won the competition with 32 team points. The Brewers were followed by Wellesley (33), Swarthmore College (56), Smith College (132), Mount Holyoke (137) and Bryn Mawr (168).

Randelle Boots of Wellesley College raced to the individual title with a time of 18:38. She was followed by Vassar's Johanna Spangler (18:49) and Swarthmore's Emma Saarel (18:51), who earned second and third place finishes, respectively. A total of 87 runners took part in the event.

Mount Holyoke will return to action on Saturday, October 30 at the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship. The event will take place at Moore State Park in Paxton, Massachusetts beginning at 2:30 p.m.
