SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (Apr. 12, 2011) - Four Mount Holyoke College student-athletes were honored at the annual Celebration of Student Leadership and Academic Excellence last night. During the campus wide event, students and recent graduates were recognized for their leadership as demonstrated through academic excellence, community service and outstanding accomplishment.

Crew team member Carol Still earned the Maurice L. Rabbino Award for her role in establishing a community partnership between the Mount Holyoke Department of Athletics and the Peck School. The award was established in 1978 by Irma L. Rabbino '53 to honor her father by recognizing a student who has made an especially significant contribution to the life of the College.

Each week, Mount Holyoke athletes make their way to Holyoke to run after school activities at the Peck School. Peck is a full service community school for children in grades K-8. Many of its students come from underpriviledged families. Teams participate in the program on a rotational basis.

Cross Country runner Rebecca Engell came up with a pair of awards. In addition to earning a Student Leadership and Service award, she was elected into Phi Beta Kappa by the Theta Chapter of Massachusetts along with swimmer Ruth Asch and rider Lindsay Sceats. Membership is based on outstanding academic achievement in at least five semesters of study at Mount Holyoke. Student Leadership and Service awards were given to those students whose leadership and service have enriched the life of the College and the wider community.
