Engell Leads Cross Country to Fifth Place at Smith Invitational

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (Sept. 11, 2010) – With senior Rebecca Engell leading the way, the Mount Holyoke College cross country team grabbed fifth place at the Smith College Invitational this morning. It was the Lyons first appearance of the 2010 season.

Engell took home fourth place overall with a time of 20:25.77. Mount Holyoke also received a boost from first year Lucia Garcia, whose time of 21:37.19 was good for 16th place. Sophomore Elizabeth MacLauchlan crossed the line in 21:54.20 to secure 24th place.

A total of 12 teams and 140 individuals took part in the event. The host Pioneer grabbed first place overall with a score of 45. They were followed by the Coast Guard Academy (57) and Lesley University (90) in the top three. Delaware Valley College (97) finished just in front of Mount Holyoke in fourth place.

Delaware Valley senior Caitlin Dorgan completed the 5,000 meter course in 19:05.63 to secure first place in the individual competition. Rounding out the top three were Meghan Kalinowski of Coast Guard (20:07.72) and Smith's Kelly Beauvais (2:23.98).

Mount Holyoke will return to action next Saturday at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Invitational. The competition will begin with a varsity race at 12:00 P.m. and conclude with a sub-varsity race at 12:45 p.m.
