Cross Country Participates in Williams College Purple Valley Classic

Rebecca Engell WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. (Sept. 25, 2010) – The Mount Holyoke College women's cross country team took part in the annual Williams College Purple Valley Classic today in Williamstown, Mass. A total of 210 runners representing 19 squads participated in the 6,000 meter race at Mount Greylock Regional High School. Mount Holyoke grabbed 18th place overall.

The Lyons were paced by senior Rebecca Engell, who crossed the line in 24:52 to secure 78th place. Sophomore Elizabeth MacLauchlan took home 141st place (26:20), while first year Lucia Garcia collected 151st place (26:40).

Middlebury cruised to the team title with an overall score of 57 points. The Panthers were followed by Williams (76) and Johns Hopkins University (86).

Two of the top three individuals were from Williams. First place went to Jennifer Gossels, who crossed the line in 22:17. Teammate Annie Dear (2:20) finished third, while Ali Simeone of Amherst College (22:19) took second.

Mount Holyoke will be off until Saturday October 9, when it competes in the New England Championship at Franklin Park in Boston, Mass. The race is slated to get underway at noon.
