Outdoor Track & Field Opens Season at Jerry Gravel Classic

WESTFIELD, Mass. (March 26, 2011) – The Mount Holyoke College women's outdoor track and field team kicked off its 2011 slate at with a 14th place finish at the Jerry Gravel Classic today. A total of 18 teams from around the region competed in the event, which took place at Westfield State University.

Jacinta Edebeli Springfield College amassed 109.5 points en route to the team title. The Pride narrowly edged out the University of Hartford (106) and American International College (94). Westfield State (82) and Tufts University (51) rounded out the top five.

Jacinta Edebeli accounted for nine of Mount Holyoke's 16 points. The senior was at her best in the 200-meter dash, where she grabbed fifth place with a time of 27.68. She earned sixth place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.50 and seventh place in the javelin with a toss of 29.73 meters. Edebeli also performed well in the shot put, nabbing 15th place with a throw of 9.94 meters.

The Lyons' remaining points came from junior Bree Hollinger and sophomore Maddie Ballon. Hollinger took home third place in the high jump with a height of 1.52 meters. Meanwhile, Ballon finished eighth in the pole vault with a height of 2.30 meters.

First year Andrea Trinkle earned ninth place in the triple jump with a distance of 8.99 meters. Meanwhile, sophomore Angelica Pascual posted a 10th place time of 13.71 in the 100-meter dash and a 13th place distance of 4.53 in the long jump.

Mount Holyoke also received solid production from sophomore Connie Ward, first year Maeve Stier and sophomore Jillian London. Ward narrowly edged out Edebeli with her 13th place toss of 10.04 meters in the shot put. Meanwhile, Stier nabbed 14th place with a height of 1.42 meters in the high jump, and London secured 14th place in the javelin with a throw of 22.71 meters.

First years Kathleen O'Connor and Kate Brackett each collected top 16 finishes in both the 100 and 400-meter hurdle events.

The Lyons will travel to Smith College for the annual Pioneer Valley Invitational next Saturday. Events are slated to begin at 11:00 a.m.
