Edebeli Leads Indoor Track and Field to Fourth Place at Smith Tartan Invitational

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (Feb. 5, 2011) – Led by Jacinta Edebeli, the Mount Holyoke College women's indoor track and field team grabbed fourth place at the Smith College Tartan Invitational today. The senior figured in on 20 points and qualified for the New England Division III Championships in a pair of events.

A total of 11 teams from around the region took part in the annual competition. Amherst College racked up 214 points to take the team title. The Lord Jeffs were followed by WPI (178) and Smith (123) in the top three. Mount Holyoke's 48 points were good for fourth place overall. Twelve Lyons contributed to the team's overall point total.

Edebeli was at her best in the shot put, where she grabbed second place with a toss of 10.83 meters. She also netted fifth place with a time of 27.80 in the 200-meter dash. As a result, she made herself eligible for the New England Division III Championships in both events. The senior opened her day with a second place finish in the 4x200-meter relay. Her teammates for the race were first year Bianca Routt, sophomore Maddie Ballon and junior Gizelle Fletcher. The quartet posted a time of 1:56.06.

Ballon went on to claim third place with her height of 2.62 meters in the pole vault. She finished three spots in front of first year Fanny Fennimore, who secured sixth place with a height of 2.31 meters.

Mount Holyoke also received a boost from first year Maeve Stier, who took home third place in the high jump with her height of 1.47 meters. Junior Alicia Forrest claimed seventh place in the shot put (9.67 meters), while first year Andrea Trinkle earned a point with her eight place finish in the long jump (4.24 meters).

The Lyons' remaining points came in track events. Their 4x800-meter relay quartet of sophomore Elizabeth MacLauchlan, senior Hannah DiCocco, first year Kate Brackett and junior Felicia Cordeiro posted a sixth place time of 11:43.98.

DiCocco (11:50.72) and MacLauchlan (11:55.27) finished in seventh and eight places, respectively, in the 3,000-meter run. Meanwhile, Fletcher nabbed seventh place in the 200-meter dash (28.13), and Cordiero collected eighth place in the 800-meter run (2:41.11).

Mount Holyoke will return to action next Saturday at the MIT Coed Invitational. The meet is slated to get underway at noon.
