Two Lyons advance to butterfly finals at NEWMAC Championships

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The Mount Holyoke College swimming and diving team saw two swimmers advance to Saturday night finals in the 100-yard butterfly to highlight the third day of the NEWMAC Championships Saturday at MIT for the Lyons.

With one day remaining in the championship meet, Mount Holyoke is in ninth place among 10 teams, with 173 points.

Sophomore Carolina Loayza (Fort Myers, Fla.) and first-year Isabel Dunn (Harbor Springs, Mich.) advanced in the 100 fly with their preliminary heat times Saturday morning. Loayza swam her prelim in 58.68 seconds, ninth fastest in a field of 42 swimmers and advancing Loayza to the A Final, while Dunn's prelim time of 1:00.24 was the 15th fastest, advancing Dunn to the B Final. Loayza finished 10th in the A Final at 59.14 seconds, while Dunn lowered her time to 59.97 seconds in the B Final to place 15th.

Other Lyons highlights included:

  • Junior Hannah Heierhoff (Wiesbaden, Germany) placed 24th in the 100 fly, in 1:01.88.
  • Senior captain Adji Diouf (Arlington, Va.) led Mount Holyoke in the 100-yard backstroke, placing 27th out of 40 competitors in 1:04.23.
  • Senior Eliza Williams (Andover, Mass.) placed 25th in the 400-yard individual medley (5:00.34).

Sunday's session includes the 1650 free, the 200 back, the 100 free, the 200 breast, the 200 fly, and 3-meter diving.
