Sewell leads Lyons on first full day of NEWMAC Championships with 5th place in 1-meter diving

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Senior diver Maddy Sewell took fifth place in 1-meter diving to highlight the first full day of the 2024 NEWMAC Swimming and Diving Championships for Mount Holyoke College, which sits in eighth place among 10 teams with two full days to go at the meet, held at MIT.

Sewell (Scottsdale, Ariz.) scored 449.55 points in the finals after posting 441.40 in prelims, taking fifth place out of 21 competitors overall, between Wellesley's Jaya Magavi (460.25) and Smith's Katherine Welsh (442.30). MIT first-year Fio Beratahani won the event with 509.30 points. A year ago at the 2023 NEWMAC Championships, Sewell scored 452.40 to place second in 1-meter diving.

Mount Holyoke also placed eighth in the 200-yard freestyle relay on Friday, with junior Kamlyn Yosick (Portland, Ore.), sophomore Carolina Loayza (Fort Myers, Fla.), senior Adji Diouf (Arlington, Va.), and junior Megan Schneider (Newton, Mass.) completing the race in 1:40.99.

Senior Eliza Williams (Andover, Mass.) led Lyons swimmers in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:28.12, 28th-fastest among 60 swimmers.

Schneider led Mount Holyoke swimmers in the 50-yard freestyle with her time of 25.47 seconds, 30th-fastest among 70 competitors in the event. Yosick placed 31st (25.59).

First-year Isabel Dunn (Harbor Springs, Mich.) led Mount Holyoke by taking 31st place out of 46 in the 200 individual medley in 2:19.75.

In the final race of the night, Mount Holyoke took ninth place in the 400 medley relay, with Diouf, Schneider, Loayza and Yosick timing in at 4:09.34.

The meet resumes Saturday at MIT with sessions at 10am and 6pm.
