Swim team opens season with dual-meet victory at University of New England

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The Mount Holyoke College swimming and diving team outscored its hosts from the University of New England 137-119 in the Lyons' first dual meet of the 2023-24 academic year on Saturday.

The Lyons led off the meet with a clear victory in the 200-yard medley relay race, with senior captain Adji Diouf (Arlington, Va.), junior Megan Schneider (Newton, Mass.), sophomore Carolina Loayza (Fort Myers, Fla.) and junior Kamlyn Yosick (Portland, Ore.) finishing in 1:59.08, over three seconds ahead of runner-up UNE (2:02.36).

The same quartet later concluded the meet with the fastest time in the 200-yard freestyle relay, at 1:54.42.

Other winning performances by the Lyons included:

  • Senior Eliza Williams (Andover, Mass.) won the 1,000-yard freestyle race in 12:02.49, over 44 seconds ahead of the runner-up from UNE. Williams was also second in the 500 free (5:54.55).
  • Diouf also took first place in the 50-yard backstroke, topping UNE's Olivia Roux by 0.71 seconds in 30.63 seconds.
  • Schneider also placed first in the 50-yard breaststroke in 33.87 seconds.
  • Loayza also placed first in the 50-yard freestyle in 26.07 seconds, 0.20 ahead of runner-up and Mount Holyoke first-year Maddy Ache (Silver Spring, Md.). Loayza was also second in the 50 fly (27.28).
  • First-year Isabel Dunn (Harbor Springs, Mich.) won her collegiate debut in the 100-yard butterfly race in 1:04.60, and later notched the fastest time in the field in the 200-yard individual medley, at 2:29.58.
  • Junior Hannah Heierhoff (Wiesbaden, Germany) took first place in the 100-yard backstroke, with a time of 1:07.90.
  • Junior Lauren Madsen (Ghent, N.Y.) won the 100-yard breaststroke, touching the wall first in 1:17.48, and was second in the 50 breast (35.13).

Mount Holyoke will host Westfield State in their first home meet next Saturday, Nov. 11, at 12pm. The meet will mark the season debut of the Lyons' three divers, led by senior All-NEWMAC selection Maddy Sewell (Scottsdale, Ariz.).
