WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Facing stiff competition from Wellesley's Jaya Magavi, Mount Holyoke College senior Maddy Sewell recorded career-best scores in both 1-meter and 3-meter diving to win both events on Saturday in a dual swimming and diving meet at Wellesley College.
Host Wellesley outscored Mount Holyoke 160-121, getting the top times in each swimming event, but the two-time All-NEWMAC performer Sewell (Scottsdale, Ariz.) highlighted the Lyons' day.
Sewell scored 276.65 points in 1-meter diving, outscoring Wellesley first-year Magavi by 11.80 points for first place. Mount Holyoke sophomore Ainsley Gruener (Topsfield, Mass.) and junior Noa Sharabi (Richmond, Calif.) were neck-and-neck for third place in the collegiate diving debut for both, with Gruener scoring 118.45 points and Sharabi scoring 118.35.
In 3-meter diving, Sewell scored 271.00 points score another nine team points for Mount Holyoke, as she edged Magavi (268.65) for first place. Both of Sewell's scores are career-high scores for six dives -- larger meets usually include 10 dives per event.
Other top-three performances for the Lyons included:
- Junior Hannah Heierhoff (Wiesbaden, Germany) placed second in the 200-yard butterfly (2:26.61).
- Junior Kamlyn Yosick (Portland, Ore.) placed third in the 50-yard freestyle (26.33 seconds).
- Junior Megan Schneider (Newton, Mass.) took third place in the 100-yard freestyle (57.78).
- First-year Sarah Delk (Waco, Texas) finished third in the 500-yard freestyle (6:02.48).
- First-year Isabel Dunn (Harbor Springs, Mich.) had the second-fastest time in the 400-yard individual medley (5:12.23) and placed third in the 200-yard butterfly (2:27.44).
- Senior Evelyn Bushway (Schenectady, N.Y.) placed third in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:46.42).
- Senior Eliza Williams (Andover, Mass.) was third-fastest in the 400-yard individual medley (5:13.55).
Mount Holyoke next competes at the RIT Invitational, Dec. 1-2 in Rochester, N.Y.
