Swimming and diving battles Smith in a competitive Senior Day matchup

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- Hosting Smith College in the final dual meet of the season, the Mount Holyoke College swimming and diving team won four events among other outstanding races on Senior Day in the MHC Natatorium.

"We had a great meet and raced really well," said head coach Dave Allen. "It's always nice to have a close meet and really race with the other team. I'm really proud of how we performed today."

Sophomore Carolina Loayza (Fort Myers, Fla.) won the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 1:00.90, and also led a 1-2-3 Mount Holyoke sweep in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:18.80.

Junior Kamlyn Yosick (Portland, Ore.) took first place in the 50-yard freestyle to lead a 1-2-3 Lyons sweep, clocking in at 25.68 seconds.

Mount Holyoke also took a win in the 200-yard freestyle relay, with Loayza, sophomore Sophie Allen (Lopez Island, Wash.), junior Megan Schneider (Newton, Mass.) and Yosick finishing in 1:42.98.

A slew of other top-two performances by the Lyons included:

  • Senior Maddy Sewell (Scottsdale, Ariz.) placed second in both 1-meter diving (220.86 points) and 3-meter diving (263.70).
  • First-year Isabel Dunn (Harbor Springs, Mich.) placed second in both the 200 freestyle (2:06.54) and the 100 butterfly (1:02.64).
  • Allen took second place in the 50 free (26.48).
  • Senior Eliza Williams (Andover, Mass.) placed second in both the 500 freestyle (5:41.21) and the 1,000 freestyle (11:37.49).
  • Schneider was second in both the 100 breaststroke (1:11.62) and the 100 free (56.80).
  • Junior Hannah Heierhoff (Wiesbaden, Germany) was second in the 200 butterfly (2:24.05).
  • Senior Evelyn Bushway (Schenectady, N.Y.) finished second in both the 200-yard breaststroke (2:41.03) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:24.76).
  • Second in the 200-yard medley relay in 1:55.91 were senior Adji Diouf (Arlington, Va.), Schneider, Dunn, and Yosick.

The Lyons celebrated nine members of the Class of 2024 on Senior Day: Lauren Brook (Woodinville, Wash.), Bushway, Diouf, Seran Goudsouzian (Hellertown, Pa.), Madison Newsham (Wilmette, Ill.), Eliana Perlman (Melbourne, Fla.), Sewell, Alexa Veliz (Tequisquiapan, Mexico), and Williams.

Smith outscored Mount Holyoke in team points, 161-136.

The Lyons now prepare for the NEWMAC Championships, taking place Feb. 22-25 at MIT.
