Sewell, Loayza lead swimming and diving at Vassar Sprint Invitational

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- The Mount Holyoke College came away with several impressive performances, including two event wins and a second-place finish, as the Lyons raced against Vassar, Skidmore and Bard on Saturday at the Vassar Sprint Invitational. The Lyons finished third in the team scoring with 327 points.

"We had some great swims, and people were able to swim events they do not usually compete in," said head coach Dave Allen. "We're still a little tired from doubles during January and looking forward to taper in the next couple of weeks."

Highlights and top-eight finishes for Mount Holyoke included:

  • Senior Maddy Sewell (Scottsdale, Ariz.) scored a career-high 277.15 points on six attempts in 3-meter diving, competing unopposed. Sewell also won 1-meter diving with 245.10 points, while sophomore teammate Ainsley Gruener (Topsfield, Mass.) scored 119.30 points for second place.
  • Sophomore Carolina Loayza (Fort Myers, Fla.) took second place out of 11 swimmers in the 100-yard butterfly, with a time of 1:00.58, and was second out of 16 swimmers in the 50-yard fly (27.51). Loayza also placed seventh in the 100-yard individual medley (1:06.98).
  • Junior Hannah Heierhoff (Wiesbaden, Germany) took fourth place in the 200-yard freestyle (2:08.70), sixth place in the 100-yard butterfly (1:05.26), and seventh place in the 500-yard freestyle (5:45.88).
  • Junior Megan Schneider (Newton, Mass.) placed fourth out of 16 swimmers in the 50-yard breaststroke, at 33.55 seconds, and was also eighth in the 100-yard IM (1:07.11).
  • First-year Isabel Dunn (Harbor Springs, Mich.) placed fifth in the 400-yard individual medley (5:05.74), fifth in the 200-yard freestyle (2:08.77), and seventh in the 100-yard backstroke (1:05.79).
  • Sophomore Sophie Allen (Lopez Island, Wash.) placed fifth out of 26 competitors in the 50-yard freestyle (26.60) and seventh out of 17 swimmers in the 100-yard free (59.08).
  • Senior Evelyn Bushway (Schenectady, N.Y.) placed sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:15.96) and eighth in the 500-yard freestyle (5:45.98)
  • Senior Eliza Williams (Andover, Mass.) placed sixth in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:40.32, and seventh in the 200-yard freestyle (2:09.21).
  • First-year Zoey Zhu (Sturbridge, Mass.) placed eighth in the 100-yard backstroke (1:07.39).
  • First-year Maddy Ache (Silver Spring, Md.) placed eighth in the 50-yard freestyle (27.04).
  • Placing third out of 10 squads in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:48.73 were Dunn, sophomore Molly Malloy (Atlanta, Ga.), Ache and Allen.

Mount Holyoke competes against Smith College in the Lyons' final home meet and final dual meet of the season on Saturday at 12pm.
