Squash Excels at Day 2 of Division III National Tourney

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Solid efforts prevailed for the Mount Holyoke College squash team as they competed at day two of the Division III National Tournament, hosted by Wesleyan University. The Lyons saw three players post victories to advance to the final day of action on Sunday.

Sophomore Sanjna Merchant (Mumbai, India/Jai Hind College) faced off against Bates's Chloe Mitchell in the B draw, falling by a 3-0 (11-4, 11-2, 11-5). She then played Wesleyan's Maxwell in the B draw consolation, shouldering a 3-0 (11-3, 11-5, 11-1) loss. Merchant advances to the B plate on Sunday where she will face Connecticut College's Sieverding at 10am.

Senior Xianger Fei (Hangzhou, China/Hangzhou Foreign Language School) squared off against Hamilton's Weismann in the B draw consolation, falling 3-0 (11-4, 11-3, 11-5). Moving on to the B plate, Fei beat Wesleyan's Ferreira by a 3-0 (11-2, 11-9, 11-4) margin. She will now face the winner of the match between her teammate Merchant and Conn. College's Sieverding. That match will take place at 11:30am.

Senior Samantha Rosado (Meriden, Conn./F.T. Maloney) lost to Sarah Fay from MIT, 3-1 (7-11, 11-5, 12-10, 12-10) in her B draw opener. She then played in the B draw consolations, defeating Sieverding by a 3-0 margin (11-1, 11-3, 11-3). Rosado went on to beat Wesleyan's LeClair, 4-0 (11-9, 11-3, 11-6). She will square off against Hamilton's Morris in the B draw consolation semifinals on Sunday at 10am.

First year Brandy Williamson (New York, N.Y./Thurgood Marshall Academy) played in the A draw consolation, shouldering a 3-1 (11-6, 10-12, 11-7, 11-5) loss to Wesleyan's Nelson. She then played in the A plate, falling to Connecticut College's Arthur by a hard-fought 3-2 (11-5, 8-11, 11-4, 8-11, 11-6) margin.

Action at the Division III National Tournament concludes on Sunday with the Lyons first matches (Merchant and Rosado) beginning at 10am.
