Squash Splits During Day 1 at Wesleyan Round Robin

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - The Mount Holyoke College squash team opened action at the 2014 Wesleyan Round Robin on Saturday, going 1-1 with a loss to William Smith College and a victory over Tufts University. The Lyons, who are ranked 25th in the CSA Poll, are now 2-3 on the season.

MHC shouldered several tough losses in the opening game against the Herons. Senior Samantha Rosado battled from the second position, falling in five sets (9-11, 11-7, 11-8, 5-11, 11-5) to Cashel McCarthy.  The Lyons lone victory in the opening match came in the fourth position as senior Xianger Fei defeated Andrea Tran by a 9-11, 11-9, 11-5, 11-7 margin.

In the victory over Tufts, first year Brandy Williamson captured victory at the top of the ladder, defeating Claudia Udolf by an 11-7, 11-4, 11-2 score. Sophomore Sanjna Merchant posted a win at the third position, winning 11-9, 5-11, 11-7, 11-5 over Ann Bellinger.

Junior Catherine Ryan claimed a hard-fought 11-5, 8-11, 11-9, 11-5 victory over Gabrielle Salomon in the sixth position, while first year Emily Chang had an 11-5, 11-5, 13-11 win against Ellen Harvey in the seventh spot.

MHC's Maria Correa wrapped up the victories in the eighth spot with an 11-9, 11-3, 12-10 win against Hannah Park.

The Lyons return to action on Sunday when they conclude action at the Wesleyan Round Robin. MHC plays Smith at 10:30am and faces host Wesleyan at 1:30pm.
