NORTON, Mass. - Wheaton College women's soccer senior Cassey Muse (Candia, N.H./Central) became the ninth 100-point scorer in program history on Saturday, as her initial assist on the game-winner hit the century mark during the Lyons' 4-0 win over visiting Mount Holyoke College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action at Mirrione Stadium.
Ranked 16th in the country and tied for third in New England by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), Wheaton extended its unbeaten streak to 11 games in improving to 9-0-2 overall and 3-0 in league play. Mount Holyoke is now 2-6-1 and 1-2.
Freshman Julia Cipriano (Middlebury, Conn./Pomperaug) was the recipient of Muse's 100th point, as the first-year player got behind the visitor defense and pushed her shot past the Mount Holyoke keeper 11:17 into action.
Muse also had a hand in Wheaton's second goal at 32:06, taking a cross from senior Kierstin Luber (Cedar Park, Texas/Cedar Park) and flicking it to classmate Tara Caney (West Springfield, Mass./West Springfield), who deposited her shot into the lower right corner of the net.
Just 1:23 after the Caney goal, the Lyons went ahead 3-0 when a Mount Holyoke player headed the ball into her own net.
Wheaton tacked on extra insurance in the second half, as freshman Cat Amick (Vashon, Wash./Vashon Island) successfully converted a penalty kick following a handball at 56:19.
Freshman goalie Ali Hinton (Lafayette, Colo./Alexander Dawson School) improved to 4-0 with one stop in 60:40, while classmate Lauren Thacker (Brunswick, Maine/Brunswick) made one save in the final 29:20. Mount Holyoke sophomore Mackenzie Randall (Harwinton, Conn./Forman) finished with eight saves in defeat.
Taking the game's six corner kicks, Wheaton finished with an 18-3 edge in shots.
The Lyons finish their four-game homestand on Tuesday with a key league matchup against regionally-ranked Springfield College at 4:00 p.m. The Pride is ranked fifth in New England and is also receiving votes toward the national poll. Mount Holyoke is also in action on Tuesday in a 4pm home contest against WPI.
