Soccer Falls In First Road Game of the Season

NEW LONDON, N.H. (Sept. 8, 2012) – Led by a three-goal effort in the first half, the Colby-Sawyer College soccer team defeated Mount Holyoke College, 4-0 in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon. With the victory, the Chargers move to 4-0, while the Lyons slip to 0-2-1 overall.

After a scoreless start through the first 12 minutes of the contest, Colby-Sawyer jumped onto the scoreboard as senior Ashley Reis (Stowe, Vt./ConVal) tallied on a breakaway. The Chargers added to their advantage at 20:38 when senior captain Laurel Bauer (Bradford, N.H./Tilton) punched in the ball off a pass across the goal mouth by junior Lauren Bernard (Manchester, N.H./Manchester Memorial).

Sophomore Sarah Little (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough) then made it a 3-0 game in favor of the home team when she chipped a shot over the reach of Lyons netminder Mackenzie Randall (Harwinton, Conn./Forman) at 35:47.

Mount Holyoke held the Chargers off the scoreboard for the majority of the second half, but senior Colleen Coburn (Middletown, Conn./Mercy) gave the home team one last score as she bent a shot into the opposite corner of the net from 10 yards out. First year Rainie Hill (Proctorsville, Vt./Green Mountain Union) was credited with the assist.

For the game, Colby-Sawyer held a 20-9 advantage in shots and a 6-3 edge in corners. Senior netminder Shay Spencer (Natick, Mass./Natick) earned the win, stopping three shots, while Mount Holyoke's Randall made 11 saves in the loss.

Senior Mallory Phaneuf (Manchester, N.H./Trinity) recorded a team-high three shots, while classmate Kiana Lussier (South Hadley, Mass./South Hadley) and sophomore Cassidy Robinson (Lebanon, N.H./Lebanon) each had two shots in the game.

Mount Holyoke is back on the field on Wednesday when it travels to Amherst for a 7pm game against the Lord Jeffs. Colby-Sawyer hosts Gordon on Tuesday in a 4pm match.
