Soccer Blanks Bears in NEWMAC Action

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (Sept. 22, 2012) – Sophomore forward Hannah Yee scored a goal in each half to lead the Mount Holyoke College women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Coast Guard Academy in NEWMAC action at the MHC Soccer Field. With the victory, the Lyons move to 1-5-1 on the season and are now 1-1-0 in conference play. The Bears slip to 1-5-0 overall with a 0-2-0 NEWMAC record.

An even start to the first half saw the homestanding Lyons take the game's first lead. Sophomore Tori Shaffrey (Charlottesville, Va./Charlottesville) earned the assist on the goal after she drove down center and split the defenders. Yee (Amherst, Mass./Amherst Regional) ran on and sent a one-touch shot toward net, which deflected off the goalie and into the back of the net at 17:33.

Both teams had their chances throughout the remainder of the half, including a close chance in front by Bears' first year Meredith Figgatt (Waynesboro, Va.), who broke through the defense for a quick shot that was scooped up by sophomore goalie Mackenzie Randall (Harwinton, Conn./Forman).

In the second half of action, both teams continued to push toward the net. The Bears had a number of solid chances to get onto the board, including a free kick by first year Hanna Jansson (Haworth, N.J.) off a Mount Holyoke yellow card, but her shot over the player wall also sailed just over the crossbar and out of play.

Yee added to the Lyons advantage at 84:47 after she ran on and shot it into the far post past a diving Devin Fellman (New Port Richey, Fla.). First year Ali Rossi (New York, N.Y.) was credited with the primary assist on the goal after she volleyed it in the box off a corner from senior Mallory Phaneuf (Manchester, N.H./Trinity).

For the game, Coast Guard held a strong advantage in shots, taking an 18-8 edge, including a 12-1 advantage in the second half. The Bears also held the margin in corner kicks with a 5-2 edge.

In goal, Randall made nine saves for the Lyons victory, while her counterpart, Fellman, stopped three shots in the loss.

Mount Holyoke returns to the pitch on Tuesday in a 4pm match at Bay Path College. Coast Guard is in action on Wednesday, hosting Connecticut College at 7pm.
