Led by sixth-year head coach Tim Walko, the Mount Holyoke golf team put together a strong season with seven top-six finishes, including a second-place finish at the Liberty League Championships.

The season began at Wellesley for the Ann S. Batchelder Invitational in mid-September. Senior captain June Conti (Amenia, N.Y./Miss Porter's School) led the way for the Lyons, posting a combined score of 165 to help MHC to a sixth-place finish.

The Lyons were back in action the following weekend, hosting their annual MHC Invitational at the Orchards, where the squad garnered sixth overall. Conti was the top performer once again as she ended the final round with a mark of 76, improving three strokes from the day before, to finish ninth.  

Senior captain Allison Shilling (New Canaan, Conn./Choate Rosemary Hall) had an excellent performance at the Williams Fall Invitational to open October, placing 26th overall in a field of 91 golfers with an overall score of 164.

The team had another solid outing the next weekend at the Middlebury Invitational as both Conti (18th) and Shilling (24th) placed in the top-30, helping the Lyons to fifth overall in a field of 15 teams. MHC closed out the fall slate at the NYU Fall Invitational as first year Susan Lee (Irvine, Calif./University HS) finished in a tie for sixth with a score of 161. Conti also had a strong performance, rallying for fifth place overall as Mount Holyoke posted third overall in the tournament, which featured nine teams.

MHC kicked-off the spring season in mid-March, traveling to Florida for a pair of dual matches. The Lyons posted a 5-1 win over William Smith at the PGA Wanamaker Course, followed by a 3.5-1.5 victory against Hamilton at Vero Beach. The full slate of spring tournament action began on April 8 at the Vassar Invitational.

The Lyons finished sixth overall in Poughkeepsie, powered by a 10th-place finish by Shilling. Action then transitioned closer to home as MHC headed to Hickory Ridge to compete at the Jack Leaman Invitational. Shilling once again paced the way with an 11th-place showing, while Lee was 24th in the field.

Mount Holyoke closed out its 2016-17 campaign back at NYU to compete in the Liberty League Championships. The Lyons powered their way to runner-up, backed by Shilling and first year Stephanie Spitzer (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central), who placed sixth (159) and ninth (161), respectively. Overall, the squad saw three players named to the All-Liberty League Second Team, including Shilling, Spitzer and Lee.

Leading Mount Holyoke for the year was Shilling who posted a scoring average of 82.38, with a low of 78. Conti notched a season scoring average of 82.63, including a round low 76, while Lee recorded an average of 84.00 for the year. Overall, Shilling finished with the top placing for the Lyons in five of the eight competitions.
