Wellesley pulls away from basketball in fourth quarter

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- Wellesley College pulled away from a close game with a big fourth quarter to defeat the Mount Holyoke College basketball team 67-39 on Saturday afternoon in Mildred S. Howard Gymnasium.

The visiting Blue were sparked by guard tandem Trinity Barrow and Mirella Funari, who combined for 27 points, 13 rebounds, 13 assists, and 13 steals. Caitlin Windross added 12 points, hitting 2-of-3 from deep, to go with 10 rebounds. Jiyun Chae and Yitzel Serna also hit double digits with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Sophomore guard Libby Harris (Foxborough, Mass.) shot 4-for-6 from three-point territory to score a team-high 12 points for the Lyons.

Wellesley (9-12, 2-7 NEWMAC) outscored Mount Holyoke (2-21, 0-9 NEWMAC) in each quarter, but couldn't shake off the host Lyons until taking control in the fourth quarter. Mount Holyoke kept Wellesley within reach for the majority of the game and was within single digits of Wellesley until 1:24 remained in the third quarter.

Serna drilled two 3-pointers for the Blue while Chae, Funari and Barrow scored two baskets apiece as they outscored the Lyons 21-6 in the fourth quarter, including the final seven points.

Mount Holyoke first-year Emma Goff (Cohasset, Mass.) had her sixth double-digit rebounding game of the season, with a game-high 12 boards to go with six points and two steals. Sophomore Taryn White (Alexandria, Va.) had six points and 11 rebounds, as the Lyons earned a 47-43 advantage on the glass. First-year guard Hannah Goen (New London, N.H.) had five points, four assists and four rebounds.

Mount Holyoke will play its last road game of the season Wednesday at 6pm at Babson.
