Basketball controls the glass again but falls to Fitchburg State

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- Fitchburg State jumped out to an 18-5 lead in the first quarter and never trailed en route to a 67-44 non-conference win over the Mount Holyoke College basketball team on Thursday night in the Mildred S. Howard Gymnasium.

Mount Holyoke (0-7) cut the deficit to seven points before halftime and trailed 30-22 at intermission. The visiting Falcons (3-4) extended their lead to 15 points (46-31) to start the fourth quarter. Mount Holyoke made it a 13-point game at 48-35 with 7:44 to go, but the Lyons couldn't get any closer to the Falcons the rest of the way.

Aliza Som scored a game-high 13 points and Rylie Harlow added nine points, six assists, four rebounds and three steals for Fitchburg. The Falcons shot .409 (27-66) from the field, .350 (7-20) from three, and won the turnover battle 31-14.

Mount Holyoke outrebounded its opponent for the sixth straight game, collecting 51 boards to Fitchburg's 32. Senior captain Nicole Lutalo (Kampala, Uganda) grabbed a game-high nine rebounds and scored a career-high nine points, and first-year Emma Goff (Cohasset, Mass.) added eight boards.

Sophomore Kendall Maurer (Orinda, Calif.) scored a team-high 11 points off the bench for the Lyons, including three 3-pointers. The Lyons also got strong games off the bench from senior Isabel Cordes (Yorktown, Va.), who had eight points and five rebounds, and sophomore Taryn White (Alexandria, Va.), who had eight points and six rebounds.

Mount Holyoke will host the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) on Saturday at 12pm. Fitchburg State plays at Elms College on Monday at 7pm.
