Basketball bitten by Bulldogs in home opener, 44-38

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- Dean College outscored the Mount Holyoke College basketball team 11-5 in the fourth quarter, pulling away from a 33-33 tie after three periods to defeat the Lyons 44-38 on Saturday afternoon in Mildred S. Howard Gymnasium.

A free throw by Mount Holyoke senior Isabel Cordes (Yorktown, Va.) late in the third quarter tied the score at 33-33, completing an 8-2 Lyons run to end the period that included a 3-pointer and a jumper by junior captain Marley Berano (Lady Lake, Fla.).

A free throw by Kendrah Doane returned the lead to Dean for good at 34-33 with 8:52 to go in the game. Tori Viau made a pair of free throws and then her sole basket of the game, a layup with 7:39 left to play. Viau added another pair of free throws with 5:25 left for a 40-37 lead. Dean held Mount Holyoke to one point over the final five minutes of the game and got a layup from Cat Thomas to eke out the win.

Dean (1-1) shot only 9-of-53 from the field (.170) and was outrebounded 41-38 by Mount Holyoke. Mount Holyoke had a 9-1 advantage in blocked shots and shot 15-47 (.319) from the floor. Dean had a 26-15 edge in turnovers, and the biggest advantage for the Bulldogs was at the free-throw line, where they made 24-of-35 attempts compared to a 6-12 performance by the Lyons.

Viau scored a game-high 17 points despite shooting 1-for-17 from the floor, thanks to a 15-for-16 performance at the free throw line. Viau added a game-high eight rebounds, including six off the offensive glass. Abi Boutin added 10 points for Dean before fouling out.

Berano scored 14 points to lead Mount Holyoke, including 10 points in the third quarter and two more in the fourth.

First-years Emma Goff (Cohasset, Mass.) and Sofia Francisco (Boston, Mass.) grabbed seven and six rebounds, respectively, for the Lyons.

Mount Holyoke (0-2) will play host to New England College on Wednesday at 6pm.
