NORTHAMPTON, Mass. -- No. 21 nationally ranked Smith College took a 20-11 lead after one quarter on the way to an 84-26 NEWMAC victory over the Mount Holyoke College basketball team on Wednesday night at Smith.

Smith (19-3, 7-1 NEWMAC) won its fifth straight game to remain tied for first place in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference standings. The host Pioneers took a 51-29 lead over the Lyons in the neighboring rivals' all-time series, which dates to the 1974-75 season.

Sophomore guard Libby Harris (Foxborough, Mass.) led Mount Holyoke (2-20, 0-7 NEWMAC) with seven points, sophomore Kendall Maurer (Orinda, Calif.) added five, and senior Nicole Lutalo (Kampala, Uganda) and sophomore Taryn White (Alexandria, Va.) added four apiece off the bench. White, returning to action after a six-game absence due to injury, led the Lyons in rebounding with six.

Hannah Martin led Smith with 19 points, shooting 7-of-9 from the field and 5-7 from three-point territory, while Ella Sylvester came off the bench to shoot 9-for-10 from the field for 19 points.

Senior Teal Howle (Florence, S.C.) took advantage of a steal by first-year Emma Goff (Cohasset, Mass.) to score a layup and give the Lyons the first lead of the game at 2-0. Smith's Ally Yamada responded with a 3-pointer and Hannah Martin added another three to give the Pioneers the lead for good, despite an answering 3-pointer by Maurer. A jumper by Goff and a layup by Lutalo closed Smith's lead to 11-9, before a 3-pointer by Selam Maher began a 9-0 run by the Pioneers to end the period.

Mount Holyoke returns home to Mildred S. Howard Gymnasium on Saturday at 1pm to host Wellesley College.
