Volleyball Defeats MCLA; Iwema Posts 1,000th Career Dig

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – Senior Kaleen Iwema notched her 1,000th career dig and the Mount Holyoke College volleyball team wrapped-up its second win of the season with a 3-0 (25-18, 26-24, 25-22) victory over Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) on Tuesday at the Mildred S. Howard Gymnasium. With the victory, the Lyons move to 2-3 on the season, while the Trailblazers even up at 2-2 overall.

Iwema (Wadsworth, Ill./Warren Township) becomes the first player in Mount Holyoke program history to reach 1,000 digs and is also now the all-time career leader with 1,008 to her credit. During last weekend's tri-match, Iwema surpassed Claire Henderson '03 (962 digs) to become the all-time leader.

The Lyons jumped out to the early lead, taking the opening set by a 25-18 margin, but the second set proved to be a back-and-forth battle with four point breaks throughout. MCLA took the opening point, but MHC went on a four-point run behind a pair of kills from junior Emma Sweeting (Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y./Hastings).

Mount Holyoke, which had led 8-4 at one point, found themselves down as the Trailblazers went on a four-point tear of their own, but the Lyons were able to pull within one and tie it at 14-all on the subsequent point on consecutive kills from Sweeting. Iwema also recorded her 1,000th dig on MHC's 14th point of the match.

MCLA rallied to take a 16-14 lead on a kill by Sam Anderson (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park), but MHC once again drew even after benefiting from an attacking error and a kill by Sweeting. The visitors once again grabbed the lead behind a pair of kills from sophomore Rachel Mills (Highland Mills, N.Y./Monroe), but a kill from Iwema and another attacking error against the Trailblazers made it 24-all. Sweeting then posted another kill, while first year Katrina Meserve (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) laid down a service ace to give the Lyons the set win.

The final set was another tight battle with MHC beginning to pull away at the 12-8 mark on a point from senior Rebecca Bland (Durham, N.C./Carolina Friends School), but kills from Anderson and Mills helped bring it to a 14-all tie. Mount Holyoke once again built up a lead, but MCLA fired back, pulling to within a point (22-21) on an attacking error against the Lyons.

Despite the momentum, the Trailblazers couldn't hold back Sweeting, who recorded her 20th kill of the match for the final deciding point and the 3-0 victory. In addition to her 20 kills, Sweeting also laid down a match-best three service aces. Iwema finished with 13 digs, while sophomore Natalie Lyon (Oakton, Va./Flint Hill School) had a match-high 32 assists.

For the Trailblazers, Mills had a squad-best 13 kills in addition to eight digs. Junior Jackie Paluilis (Orange, Mass./Mahar) chipped in with a team-high 13 digs, while first year Chanielle Enomoto (Wailuku, Hawaii/Maui) added 13 assists.

Mount Holyoke returns to action this weekend when it heads to Poughkeepsie, N.Y., to compete in the 2014 Seven Sisters Championship – a two-day event hosted by Vassar College. The Lyons open on Saturday against Wellesley at 12:30pm. MCLA is next in action on Thursday when it travels to Smith for a 7pm contest.
