Volleyball Takes Part in Midcoast Classic

BRUNSWICK, Maine (Oct. 3, 2009) – The Mount Holyoke College women’s volleyball team participated in the 2009 Midcoast Classic this weekend. After suffering a 3-0 setback to Rivier College on Friday night, the Lyons were blanked 3-0 by both Bowdoin College and Worcester State College on Saturday. All three contests took place at Bowdoin’s Morrell Gymnasium.

Bowdoin finished the weekend with a perfect 3-0 mark, while Rivier went 2-1, and Worcester State ended 1-2. The Polar Bears were paced by Tournament Most Valuable Player Gillian Page. She was joined on the All-Tournament Team by teammates Jenna Diggs and Melissa Haskell, Rivier's Danielle Stoodley and Kenna Finlayson, Mount Holyoke junior outside hitter Rosa Marruffo and Worcester State's Lauren Saylor.

Mount Holyoke kicked off its weekend with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-13, 25-6) defeat against Rivier on Friday. Junior setter Kateryna Kuc posted a double-double on 11 assists and 11 digs to lead the way. The Lyons also received solid production from first year outside hitter Kathryn Brummer, who tallied three kills and seven digs. Marruffo and sophomore middle hitter Tyler Protano-Goodwin accumulated four kills apiece, while junior defensive specialist Kara Neidhardt added nine digs

The Lyons faced off against host Bowdoin in their first match of the day on Saturday, falling by a score of 3-0 (25-15, 25-6, 25-14). First year outside hitter Morgan Cooley produced five kills to set the tone. Marruffo posted nine digs, and Kuc chipped in with eight assists.

Mount Holyoke then rounded out its weekend with a 3-0 (25-12, 25-13, 25-21) setback against Worcester State College. Kuc registered her second double-double of the tournament with 11 assists and 11 digs. Meanwhile, Brummer totaled six kills.

The Lyons (3-10, 0-4 NEWMAC) will resume their New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) slate on Tuesday, when they visit Springfield College at 7:00 p.m.
