Elms Holds Off Volleyball, 3-1

CHICOPEE, Mass. (Sept. 24, 2009) – Sophomore outside hitter Stacy Croteau racked up 20 kills and 19 digs, as the Elms College women’s volleyball team handed Mount Holyoke College a 3-1 (25-20, 25-20, 18-25, 25-23) setback this evening at Picknelly Arena. It was the Blazers first win over the Lyons in 11 all-time meetings. They also ended a nine match slide with the triumph.

Elms (3-10, 0-0 NECC) received an outstanding performance from sophomore setter Jen Rego, who exploded for a triple-double on ten kills, 17 digs and 13 assists. Senior setter Kim Phillips also delivered 31 assists for the hosts.

Mount Holyoke was paced by junior outside hitter Rosa Marruffo, who posted her second career double-double on ten kills and 13 digs. First year outside hitter Morgan Cooley recorded nine kills and nine digs, while classmate Kathryn Brummer added six kills and 16 digs from the middle hitter position. Junior setter Kateryna Kuc posted 31 assists and 12 digs to round things out for the guests.

Mount Holyoke (2-5, 0-3 NEWMAC) will return to action on Saturday, when it travels to St. Joseph College of Connecticut for a pair of non-conference contests. They Lyons will face off against the host Blue Jays at 11:00 a.m. before taking on Becker College at 1:00 p.m.
