WPI Tops Volleyball, 3-0

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (Sept. 22, 2009) – Led by first year outside hitter Bailey Sarber, the Worcester Polytechnic Institute women’s volleyball team downed New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe Mount Holyoke College 3-0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-19) this evening at the Mildred Howard Gymnasium.

Sarber posted a double-double on 14 kills and 14 digs for the Engineers, who earned their first league win of the 2009 campaign. WPI also received solid production from senior outside hitter Becca Holmberg, who recorded six kills, eight digs and a pair of service aces. Sophomore defensive specialist Joan Porambo delivered 12 digs, while setters Alex Rangel and Kim Woodward dished out 17 and 16 assists, respectively.

Leading the way for Mount Holyoke was junior outside hitter Rosa Marruffo, who collected team highs of five kills and 15 digs. First year middle hitter Kathryn Brummer posted four kills and eight digs, while classmate Morgan Cooley added three kills and nine digs from the outside hitter position. Rounding things out for the Lyons was junior setter Kateryna Kuc, who totaled 11 assists, seven digs and three service aces..

Mount Holyoke (2-4, 0-3 NEWMAC) will kick off a three match road trip on Thursday, when it visits Elms College at 7:00 p.m. WPI (12-2, 1-2 NEWMAC) is slated to take the court again on Friday at Anna Maria College. The Engineers will face off against the host Amcats at 3:00 p.m. before taking on Daniel Webster College at 5:00 p.m.
