Solid Effort Leads Tennis to 8-1 Victory over Colby-Sawyer

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – The Mount Holyoke College tennis team used a sweep of doubles and wins in five of six singles matches to defeat Colby-Saywer College, 8-1, on Saturday at the MHC Field House. With the victory, the Lyons move to 10-6 overall, while the Chargers are now 15-5 on the season.

Mount Holyoke battled to wins in several hard-fought doubles matches. In the first flight, senior captain Margaux Holloschutz (Franklin Lakes, N.J./Saddle River Day School) and first year Ayame Yazawa (Tokyo, Japan/St. Johnsbury Academy (VT) earned an 8-6 win over Colby-Sawyer senior captain Ashlyn Ramsay (Barkhamsted, Conn./Northwestern Regional) and sophomore captain Ashley Woodside (Hampden, Maine/Hampden Academy).

The second flight match-up between MHC's Ishita Tibrewal (Kolkata, India/Modern HS for Girls) and Madison Rosen (Portland, Ore./Grant) and CSC's Aislinn O'Connor (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) and Evelyn Miller (Smithfield, R.I.) was also close, as the Lyons' duo earned a 9-7 win.

Mount Holyoke took control of the third doubles as junior Amy Chen (Hilo, Hawaii/Hilo) and first year Clara Wang (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) defeated Chargers duo Maddy Gemerek (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) and Lauren Blanchard (Agawam, Mass./Agawam) by an 8-0 score.

In singles play, Yazawa bested Ramsay, 6-0, 6-2 from the first flight, while Holloschutz was a 7-5, 6-3 winner over Woodside at two. Tibrewal grabbed a 6-4, 6-3 win over O'Connor at three, while senior captain Michelle Cai (Hong Kong, China/St. Paul's Co-Educational College) was a 6-2, 6-0 winner against Gemerek at five. Chen rounded out the Lyons wins in the sixth position with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Blanchard.

The Chargers earned their lone point in the match from the fourth flight as Miller got a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Wang.

The Lyons are right back in action on Sunday when they travel to Connecticut College for a 10:30am match against the Camels. Colby-Sawyer returns to the courts on April 10 in a 1pm home match against Wheaton.
