Tennis Falls to MIT in NEWMAC Semifinals

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – No. 1 seed MIT came up with a decisive win in the semifinals of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's tennis tournament, downing No. 4 seed Mount Holyoke College, 5-0. With the win the Engineers move on to tomorrow's conference final.

MIT (9-0) started the match with identical 8-0 wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to take an early 2-0 advantage. Mount Holyoke (8-4) saw it's No. 2 team of junior Alexa Colas (Teaneck, N.J.) and sophomore Ishita Tibrewal (Kolkata, India) won a game, but they could not stop the MIT sweep as the Engineers' duo of sophomore Sonya Das (Arden Hills, Minn.) and freshman Kelly Zhu (Houston, Texas) put MIT up 3-0 with an 8-1 decision.

In singles play junior Wendi Kong (Cupertino, Calif.) put MIT one point away from the match victory with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6 over sophomore Michelle Cai (Hong Kong, China). Sophomore Dora Tzeng (Fremont, Calif.) then put the match in the win column for the Engineers, scoring a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 3 over Tibrewal. With the match decided, the remaining singles contests were not finished.

MIT will move on to the finals of the tournament, which the Engineers are hosting, tomorrow with the action beginning on the DuPont Tennis Courts at 1:00 p.m.
