Tennis Bests Puerto Rico-Mayaguez Behind Solid Doubles Effort

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. - Led by an outstanding start in doubles action, the Mount Holyoke College tennis team posted an 8-1 victory over the University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez on Tuesday evening. The Lyons move to 9-6 on the season, while the Bulldogs are now 13-2 overall.

Mount Holyoke kicked things off in fine fashion as all three doubles recorded strong wins. Senior captain Margaux Holloschutz and first year Ayame Yazawa powered their way to an 8-4 win in the first flight, besting UPR's Coralys Colon and Angela Gelabert. In the second flight, sophomore Ishita Tibrewal and first year Madison Rosen combined for an 8-5 win against Natalia Sanchez and Elena Rivera.

Finally in the third flight, junior Amy Chen and first year Clara Wang defeated Angiemar Torres and Andrea Ortiz, 8-4 for the sweep.

Action moved into the singles competition and the Lyons proved to be up to the challenge. Yazawa cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Coralys Colon in the first flight, followed by a 6-1, 6-0 win from Chen over Amarilys Gonzalez at six to give MHC five points and the match victory.

Tibrewal went on to post a 6-4, 6-3 victory against Mara Colon at three, but the Bulldogs battled back as Rivera bested Wang at four, 6-3, 6-3 to give UPR it's lone point. Senior captain Michelle Cai then picked up a win at five, posting a 6-2, 6-3 win over Sanchez, followed by a win from Holloschutz at two.

For Holloschutz, she battled back in the opening set, trailing 0-3 to pull out a 6-3 set win, followed by a close 6-4 win in the second to defeat Gelabert.

Mount Holyoke returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Colby-Sawyer at 10am. Puerto Rico-Mayaguez is in action on Wednesday, traveling to Springfield for a 4pm match against the Pride.
