NEW HAVEN, Conn. - A four-goal opening half set the tone as the Mount Holyoke College soccer team earned a 6-1 victory at Albertus Magnus College on Sunday afternoon. The Lyons posted their first win of the season, moving to 1-1 overall, while the Falcons are also now 1-1 with the loss.

MHC faced early pressure, but capitalized in the 26th minute as the Falcons accidentally put the ball into its own net for an own goal and a 1-0 lead for the visitors. Just over 10 minutes later, the Lyons made it a 2-0 game as sophomore Hannah Finn-Erb dribbled through a pair of defenders for a short pass to senior Sara Sanau Ruiz, who shot it into the top left corner.

Finn-Erb would then make it a three-goal lead less than four minutes later, followed by the first of the season from senior Liz Rose, who converted a pass from her sister, senior captain Suz Rose for the 4-0 lead in the 40th minute.

In the second half of action, Albertus Magnus got one back as Sophia Austin passed the ball to Kerrigan Loughman, who finished it with the tally past junior goalie Amanda Manaster in the 58th minute.

Despite the momentum for the home team, it was the Lyons who capitalized with another Sanau Ruiz goal in the 68th minute. The Falcons had their chances over the final 12 minutes of play, but Mount Holyoke sealed the game with a goal from sophomore Minerva Veeser-Bobea in the final 25 seconds.

Mount Holyoke held a 14-13 edge in shots, while Albertus Magnus owned a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks. Manaster earned the victory with four stops, while Falcons keeper Lexie Finn made six stops in the loss.

The Lyons return to action on Thursday when they host Amherst College at 7pm on the MHC soccer field. Albertus Magnus is back on the pitch on Wednesday with a 3pm contest at Mitchell.
