Soccer Falls 3-2 in OT to Smith

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - Smith College's Innis Hitt sent the game-winning goal in 6:23 into overtime to give the Pioneers a 3-2 win over Mount Holyoke College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Tuesday evening. With the win, Smith moves to 8-5-5 and is now 2-4-3 in conference play, while the Lyons slip to 8-9-0 and 2-7-0 in the NEWMAC.

Trailing by a 2-1 margin with less than three minutes remaining in regulation, Lyons first year McKenna Lamb changed the landscape after she powered home a pass from senior keeper Zoe Marshall to knot the game at 2-all. MHC nearly grabbed the go-ahead with seconds left, but sophomore Sara Sanaú Ruiz's shot was scooped up by Pioneers goalie Alanna Lynch to send it into overtime.

In the extra session, the Pioneers stepped up their pressure, sending in a pair of shots on goal which Marshall saved. But it was Hitt at the 96:23 mark, who converted a pass from Jackie Foody, to give Smith the victory.

Sanaú Ruiz opened the game's scoring in the 37th minute with an unassisted marker. The Lyons held the advantage until the 51st minute when Meredith Roberts recorded the equalizer to make it a 1-all game. Foody put the home team ahead in the 76th minute, setting up the late drama for Lamb's goal.

Smith held a 29-4 advantage in shots, also owning a 12-3 edge in corner kicks. Lynch recorded two saves in the victory, while Marshall made 10 stops in the Lyons loss.

The Pioneers return to the pitch on Saturday, traveling to Wheaton for a 2pm match. The Lyons are also back on Saturday, playing at WPI at 4pm.
