Soccer Shoulders 3-2 Loss to Elms

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (Sept. 6, 2012) – Elms College battled back from a one-goal deficit, scoring three straight as it held off Mount Holyoke College, 3-2 in non-conference action at the MHC Soccer Field on Thursday afternoon. The Blazers moved to 1-2 overall, while the Lyons slip to 0-1-1 on the young season.

Locked in a 1-1 tie after the first half of action, Elms took advantage at 47:28 as first year Alexa Rinaudo (Bellmore, N.Y./Mepham) took a feed from classmate Melissa Welch (Westfield, Mass./Westfield) and put it past Lyons keeper Mackenzie Randall (Harwinton, Conn./Forman) to take the lead.

Welch pushed it to a two-goal advantage for the visitors at 66:45 as she scored on a breakaway. Mount Holyoke was able to cut the deficit to one (3-2) at the 86:24 mark when sophomore Hannah Yee (Amherst, Mass./Amherst Regional) volleyed in a cross from senior Kiana Lussier (South Hadley, Mass./South Hadley), but could not complete the comeback as Elms held on.

The Lyons opened the game's scoring as senior Mallory Phaneuf (Manchester, N.H./Trinity) sent a long shot in from outside the box that Elms netminder Hayley Zisk (Baldwinville, Mass./Narragansett Regional) attempted to punch away, but could not handle as it went into the upper left corner.

Elms answered with less than a minute to play in the first half when first year Marissa Yowell (Ashland, Mass./Ashland) scored off her own rebound, which had initially been a kick save by Randall.

For the game, Mount Holyoke held the advantage in shots (18-11), while the Blazers had the edge in corner kicks (4-2). Zisk posted six saves in goal before giving way to Rinaudo, who had three stops in the victory. For the Lyons, Randall had six stops.

Mount Holyoke is back in action on Saturday when it travels to Colby-Sawyer for a 12:30pm match. Elms also plays on Saturday, hosting MCLA at 2pm.
