With longtime head coach Andy Whitcomb leading the way, the Mount Holyoke field hockey team enjoyed one the most memorable seasons in school history. After earning a share of the NEWMAC Regular Season Championship, the Lyons took home top honors at the ECAC Tournament with a thrilling 4-2 triumph over Plymouth State University.

With the win, Lyons closed out their outstanding season with an overall record of 16-5. Their 244 points, 92 goals and 60 assists were all single season school records.

Mount Holyoke was playing in the ECAC Tournament for the fifth time in program history. The Lyons were crowned champions in 2002 and also made appearances in 1999, 2000 and 2005. They closed out the season with eight wins in their last nine matches.

At the end of the year, senior forward Shara Robertson became just the second player in program history to earn First Team All-America honors. Arguably the top offensive player to suit up for the Lyons, she graduated as the school's all-time leader in career points (159) and goals (67).

The forward finished the year with 68 points on 25 goals and 18 assists. In addition to recording hat tricks in wins over Regis College and Smith College, three of her tallies went down as winners.

Robertson was named to the NFHCA All-Region First Team as well as the NEWMAC All-Conference First Team. She earned NEWMAC Offensive Player of the Week honors on September 26 and went on to represent the Lyons at the NFHCA Senior All-Star Game alongside defender Tricia Chase.

Mount Holyoke outscored its opponents 70-19 during the regular season and posted a 6-2 mark in league play.

After rolling to a 7-2 triumph over Babson College in the Semifinal Round of the NEWMAC Tournament, the Lyons suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 setback to MIT in the Championship the following day. They enjoyed a 1-0 advantage deep into the second half before the Engineers tied things up in the waning seconds of regulation and scored again 1:51 into overtime.

Mount Holyoke rebounded with three straight victories in the ECAC Tournament the following week to end its season on a high note. Prior to their win over Plymouth State, the Lyons knocked off Worcester State University (8-1) and the University of New England (2-1). Robertson added Tournament Most Outstanding Player honors to her trophy case after posting five goals and three assists in the three games.

Over the course of the season, 13 players recorded points for Mount Holyoke.

Newcomer Kirsten Kilburn made an immediate impact with her outstanding production from the midfield. In addition to scoring 16 times, she also dished out nine assists and added six defensive saves. The rookie was nearly unstoppable on penalty corners due in large part to her lethal shot from the top of the circle.

Senior Jess Fajardo found the back of the cage 16 times. Meanwhile, sophomore Stephanie Slysz chipped in with 11 goals and 10 assists.

Robertson was joined on the NEWMAC All-Conference First Team by Chase and goalkeeper Katie Gibson. All three players were also selected to All-Region Teams along with Fajardo and midfielder Taylor Hedges.

Chase and Gibson anchored a defensive unit that surrendered just 27 goals all season long. Chase was named NEWMAC Defensive Player of the Week on October 10. She finished the year with seven defensive saves. Meanwhile, Gibson led all NEWMAC starters with a goals against average of 1.26 and a save percentage of .799 while recording five shutouts. The senior earned NEWMAC Defensive Player of the Week honors on two occasions.
