Cross Country Takes Seventh Place at NEWMAC Championship

BOSTON, Mass. (Oct. 31, 2011) – The Mount Holyoke College cross country team took seventh place at the NEWMAC Championship today at Franklin Park in Boston, Mass. Leading the way for the Lyons was senior Felicia Cordeiro, who took home 41st place with a time of 20:48.

In addition to Cordeiro, the Lyons also received a boost from first year Emily Baker, who grabbed 46th place with her time of 20:58. Senior Holly Valenzuela was next in 48th place. She recorded a time of 20:59.

Seven runners finished in the top ten for the MIT, which totaled just 22 points en route to its fifth straight NEWMAC title and eighth overall. The Engineers were followed by Wellesley College (50), the Coast Guard Academy (102), Smith College (142), Springfield College (163), Babson College (168), Mount Holyoke (192), WPI (196), Clark University (215) and Wheaton College (243).

Wellesley's Randelle Boots completed the 5,000-meter course in 18:45 to capture Runner of the Year honors for the second year in a row. Meanwhile, MIT's Elaine McVay crossed the line in 18:52 to secure the Rookie of the Year award. She finished third overall.

The Lyons will wrap up their 2011 slate on Saturday, November 12, when they compete in the NCAA Division III New England Regional Championship at Bowdoin College.
