Cross Country Takes Part in New England Championship

BOSTON, Mass. (Oct. 8, 2011) – The Mount Holyoke College cross country team posted a 36th place finish at the 2011 New England Cross Country Championship today in Boston, Massachusetts. A total of 269 runners from 39 teams competed in the event, which took place at Franklin Park.

Leading the way for Mount Holyoke was senior Felicia Cordeiro, who completed the 5,000 meter course in 20:40 to secure 180th place. The Lyons also received a boost from sophomore Lucia Garcia, who crossed the line in 20:55 to take 196th place. Junior Phoebe Tengdin added a 206th place result (21:08).

Boston College (38) dominated the field en route to claiming the team title for the second year in a row. Boston University (73) and the University of Vermont (118) rounded out the top three. Mount Holyoke totaled 1,043 points.

In the individual competition, Katie Matthews of Boston University claimed top honors with a time of 17:18.

The Lyons are scheduled to compete in the Seven Sisters Championship next Saturday at 10:00 a.m. Bryn Mawr College will host the annual event.
