NEW YORK -- Mount Holyoke College junior Maddy Sewell capped her excellent first season of collegiate competition Saturday by placing eighth among 26 competitors in 1-meter diving, as the NCAA Division III Northeast Regional Diving Championships concluded at New York University.

Sewell (Scottsdale, Ariz.) scored 387.65 points on 11 dives off the 1-meter board at Palladium Athletic Facility, 5.80 points behind seventh-place Emma Scott of MIT and 3.25 points ahead of ninth-place Sydney Ho of Tufts.

After her 12th-place finish out of 24 divers on the 3-meter board Friday, Sewell likely will not qualify for the NCAA Division III Championships, indicating the conclusion of the 2022-23 season for Mount Holyoke swimming and diving. The top four finishers in each of the two diving events automatically qualify for the NCAA Division III Championships, with qualifications beyond the top four possible to reach a total of eight divers that will qualify from the region.

Sewell caps a remarkable junior season returning from an injury that sidelined her last season and having missed competition along with everyone else during her first year at Mount Holyoke. Sewell broke her own personal record on six dives on numerous occasions during the season, finishing with season-best six-dive scores of 259.70 points on the 1-meter board and 264.90 points on the 3-meter board.

Mount Holyoke finished eighth out of 10 teams in the NEWMAC Women's Swimming & Diving Championships, and notched their second straight winning season (5-4) in head-to-head competition.
