Sewell takes second place in 1-meter diving as Lyons finish 8th at NEWMAC Championships

WORCESTER, Mass. -- Junior Maddy Sewell placed second overall in 1-meter diving, as the Mount Holyoke College swimming and diving team ended the 2023 NEWMAC Championships in eighth-place out of 10 teams Sunday at WPI.

Mount Holyoke finished the four-day meet with 275 points, eighth-most by a margin of 57 behind seventh-place Babson and 29.5 points ahead of ninth-place Smith -- the Lyons' second straight NEWMAC finish. MIT won the team championship with 1,441 points.

Sewell (Scottsdale, Ariz.) placed second to MIT's Rachel Loh in 1-meter diving on Sunday just as she did at 3 meters on Friday, earning her a second Second Team All-Conference honor of the meet. Sewell scored 435.00 points in the preliminary round, third highest behind Loh (475.35) and MIT's Ava Dijstelbloem (443.05) and more than enough to advance to finals. In finals, Sewell's 452.40 points trailed only Loh's 471.10, with MIT's Katelin Du third (445.80) and Dijstelbloem fourth (439.15).

Other last-day highlights for Mount Holyoke included:

Junior Evelyn Bushway (Schenectady, N.Y.) placed 12th in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 18:50.42, and 18th in the 200-yard breaststroke, with a time of 2:29.04.
Sophomore Hannah Heierhoff (Wiesbaden, Germany) swam identical times (2:17.02) in the 200-yard butterfly preliminaries and B Final, good for 14th place.
First-year Carolina Loayza (Fort Myers, Fla.) took 15th place in the 200 butterfly with a B Final time of 2:17.75, after posting a 2:17.63 in prelims.
Sophomore Emily Tarinelli (Groton, Conn.) finished 22nd in the 200-yard butterfly, with a time of 2:29.78.
Junior Seran Goudsouzian (Hellertown, Pa.) placed 24th in the 200-yard butterfly (2:39.91).
Sophomore Megan Schneider (Newton, Mass.) took 25th place in the 100-yard freestyle (55.18).
Senior Lauren Leese (Round Rock, Texas) placed 28th in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:41.93).
Junior Adji Diouf (Arlington, Va.) placed 30th in the 100-yard freestyle (56.11).

Mount Holyoke finished off the meet with an eighth-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay, with a time of 3:44.65 swum by Schneider, Loayza, Bushway, and Diouf.
