SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- The Mount Holyoke College swimming and diving team lost for the first time in team scoring to a Division III opponent in Wellesley College on Saturday at the MHC Natatorium, in spite of several strong performances led by junior diver Maddy Sewell.

The Blue outscored the host Lyons by a 166-112 score.

Sewell (Scottsdale, Ariz.) set a personal best mark in 1-meter diving with 258.95 points, and again exceeded the qualifying score for NCAA Regionals. Sewell outscored Wellesley's Elsa Marsden and Lily Duff at both 1 and 3 meters, where Sewell scored 258.55 points.

"Maddy has been working hard in practice, and it is great to see it paying off in competitions," said Mount Holyoke diving coach Rachel Araujo. "We are excited to see her performance the rest of the season and move on to Regionals."

Mount Holyoke finished off the meet with a victory in the 200-yard freestyle relay, with a time of 1:44.24 swum by sophomore Megan Schneider (Newton, Mass.), first-year Ruth Bailey (Edison, N.J.), junior Adji Diouf (Arlington, Va.) and first-year Carolina Loayza (Fort Myers, Fla.).

Top-two finishes for Mount Holyoke swimmers included:

  • Loayza placed second in the 50-yard freestyle (26.34).
  • First-year Hannah Heierhoff (Wiesbaden, Germany) placed second in both the 200-yard butterfly (2:25.54) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:50.61).
  • Senior Anais Magner (Whakatane, New Zealand) took second place in the 200-yard backstroke (2:26.46).
  • Junior Eliza Williams (Andover, Mass.) had the second-fastest time in the 400-yard individual medley, at 5:04.16.

"We had people swim a variety of events, and it was great to see people compete in events that they do not usually swim," said Mount Holyoke head coach Dave Allen.

The Lyons next compete at the Don Richards Invitational, taking place at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) Dec. 2-3.
