Sewell, Loayza post wins for swimming and diving team at Skidmore Sprints

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- The Mount Holyoke College swimming and diving team had three event wins and a pair of second-place finishes to highlight the Skidmore Sprints Invitational on Saturday. The Lyons placed third out of four women's teams at the meet with 342 points, trailing Vassar (673) and Skidmore (473) while outscoring Bard (33).

Mount Holyoke's top performances included:

  • Junior diver Maddy Sewell (Scottsdale, Ariz.) scored a career-high 259.70 points to finish first among three divers in 1-meter diving, exceeding her previous best score by 0.75 points. Sewell's 254.25 points on the 3-meter platform easily topped the field as well.
  • First-year Carolina Loayza (Fort Myers, Fla.) took first place out of 10 competitors in the 100-yard butterfly race, with a time of 1:01.19. Loayza also placed fourth out of 23 women in the 50-yard butterfly (27.92).
  • Sophomore Megan Schneider (Newton, Mass.) placed second out of 17 competitors in the 50-yard breaststroke with a time of 34.10 seconds, and sixth out of 30 women in the 100-yard individual medley (1:06.95).
  • Junior Evelyn Bushway (Schenectady, N.Y.) took second place out of 10 swimmers in the 200-yard freestyle, with a time of 2:08.15. Bushway also placed fifth out of 14 swimmers in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:35.87.
  • Sophomore Lauren Madsen (Ghent, N.Y.) placed third in the 50-yard breaststroke (34.75) and fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:18.82).
  • Sophomore Hannah Heierhoff (Wiesbaden, Germany) took fourth place in the 100-yard backstroke (1:06.41).
  • First-year Ruth Bailey (Edison, N.J.) finished fourth in the 200-yard freestyle (2:09.70).
  • Senior captain Anais Magner (Whakatane, New Zealand) placed fifth in the 100-yard backstroke (1:08.24).
  • Placing third in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:45.56 were Loayza, first-year Sophie Allen (Lopez Island, Wash.), Schneider, and junior Adji Diouf (Arlington, Va.).

Mount Holyoke will compete in its final dual meet of the year next Saturday, Feb. 4 at Smith College starting at 1pm.
