NORTHAMPTON, Mass. -- The Mount Holyoke College swimming and diving team wrapped up dual-meet competition Saturday by outscoring rival Smith College in the Pioneers' pool, on the strength of a host of event-winning performances.

Mount Holyoke outscored Smith 167-127, for a final head-to-head record of 5-4 this year.

"It was a great meet, with the score going back and forth for most of the meet," said Mount Holyoke head coach Dave Allen. "We had a few people limited due to injuries, and the team really stepped up."

Mount Holyoke led off the meet with a 2.62-second win over Smith in the 200-yard medley relay, with junior Adji Diouf (Arlington, Va.), sophomore Lauren Madsen (Ghent, N.Y.), first-year Carolina Loayza (Fort Myers, Fla.), and first-year Ruth Bailey (Edison, N.J.) finishing in 1:57.32.

The Lyons finished off the meet by winning the 200-yard freestyle relay by 3.08 seconds over Smith. Bailey, senior Erin Schrama (Providence, R.I.), Diouf, and sophomore Megan Schneider (Newton, Mass.) finished the relay in 1:46.80.

Mount Holyoke junior diver Maddy Sewell (Scottsdale, Ariz.) finished the dual-meet season undefeated against her opponents, after outscoring her Smith competition on both boards. Sewell placed first against three competitors in 1-meter diving with 250.30 points, and went on to win at 3 meters with 249.20 points.

"Maddy has been working really hard on a couple upgrade dives, and it was great to see her compete them so well in today's meet," said Mount Holyke diving coach Rachael Araujo. "We're both excited to get back to work cleaning up some more dives before heading to NEWMACs. NEWMACs always has tough competition, but I'm confident in Maddy's training and excited to see her compete against some of the region's best divers."

Other top Mount Holyoke performances included:

  • Junior Evelyn Bushway (Schenectady, N.Y.) won the 200-yard breaststroke (2:36.88) and the 100-yard individual medley (1:06.24), and also placed second in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:13.51).
