Sewell finishes a close second in 3-meter diving at NEWMAC Championships

WORCESTER, Mass. -- Mount Holyoke College junior Maddy Sewell claimed second place in 3-meter diving, only 1.55 points behind first place, to highlight the second day of the NEWMAC Women's Swimming & Diving Championships for the Lyons.

With two days remaining in the NEWMAC Women's Swimming & Diving Championships, Mount Holyoke stands in seventh place out of 10 teams with 133 points. The Lyons lead Babson by 12 points and trail sixth-place Wellesley by 76.5.

Sewell (Scottsdale, Ariz.) scored 464.50 points on 10 dives in the 3-meter diving finals, second only behind MIT sophomore Rachel Loh (466.05). MIT senior Katelin Du took third place with 449.50 points. In the preliminaries for the event held Friday afternoon, Sewell was also a close second behind Loh, scoring 446.45 points to Loh's 449.30, with Du in third place with 413.00.

The second-place finish scored 21 team points for Mount Holyoke, and earned Sewell Second Team All-Conference honors as well.

Mount Holyoke took eighth place in the 200-yard freestyle relay, with sophomore Megan Schneider (Newton, Mass.), sophomore Hannah Heierhoff (Wiesbaden, Germany), first-year Carolina Loayza (Fort Myers, Fla.) and junior Adji Diouf (Arlington, Va.) finishing in 1:40.39, just 0.14 behind seventh-place Wellesley.

Schneider also had Mount Holyoke's second-best individual finish on the day, taking 29th place in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.31 seconds, edging Diouf in 30th place (25.44) and Loayza in 31st (25.64).

Earning the top individual finish on the team for the day was senior Lauren Leese (Round Rock, Texas), who placed 26th in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:22.65.

The NEWMACs resume at 10am Saturday at WPI, followed by the evening session at 6pm.
