HARTFORD, Conn. - Powered by a number of solid efforts, the Mount Holyoke College swimming & diving team split in tri-meet action at Trinity College on Saturday afternoon. The Lyons posted a 144-134 victory over Vassar College, but fell to the host Bantams by a 179-98 margin.
MHC opened the meet with a second-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay. The foursome of senior captain Anne Kuenning, junior Claire Beckett, senior Katie Tyler and senior captain Emily Craig notched a time of 1:58.59.
In the 1,000-yard freestyle, first year Sarah Ratzlaff was sixth with a time of 12:30.11, while sophomore Delany Berry touched the wall in a time of 12:43.61 - good for seventh overall.
Craig then claimed victory in the 200-yard freestyle, posting a time of 2:04.95, nearly three seconds faster than the runner-up from Trinity (2:07.73). First year Natalie Burkett also had a solid effort, placing fifth overall with a time of 2:15.39, while classmate Jane Zhang was seventh (2:37.69).
Kuenning went on to swim to second in the 100-yard backstroke, hitting a mark of 1:05.50, while in the 100-yard breaststroke, Beckett was third (1:16.81) and sophomore Kate Flaherty was fifth (1:22.28).
Ratzlaff then finished fourth in the 200-butterfly (2:55.57), while Tyler claimed victory in the 50-free with a time of 26.14. Also finishing well in the 50-free was Flaherty in seventh (28.57).
Craig grabbed her second victory of the afternoon in the 100-free, touching with a time of 57.68, while Kuenning was second in the 200-back with a mark of 2:19.31 and also second in the 500-free with a time of 5:43.23.
Tyler then finished third in the 200-breast (2:43.41) and also took third in the 100-fly (1:04.53). Craig closed out the individual swimming events in the 200-individual medley, claiming victory in a time of 2:22.26. Also posting well in the event was Beckett, who was fifth (2:30.98).
First year Samantha Nemivant had an outstanding effort on the day, winning off both boards. In the 1-meter event, she recorded 249.37 points, while off the 3-meter, she notched 233.47 points.
Mount Holyoke returns to action on January 21-22 when it competes at the 2017 Seven Sisters Championship, hosted by Vassar College.
