MALDEN, Mass. (Apr. 1, 2012) – The Mount Holyoke College crew team kicked off its spring slate against Tufts University, Tulane University and the Wentworth Institute of Technology this morning on the Malden River. Over the course of the day, the Lyons competed in seven races.
Their first novice eight boat set the tone with their overwhelming victory over Wentworth. They finished the race 32 seconds in front of the Leopards with their time of 7:48. Earlier in the day, the team clocked a time of 8:04 in their race against Tufts.
Mount Holyoke's first varsity eight boat came up just short in its races against Tufts and Tulane. In their first outing of the day, the Lyons fell by three seconds to Tufts despite a time of 7:03. Their time of 7:22 in their second race was just two seconds off the pace set by the Green Wave.
The results were similar for Mount Holyoke's second varsity eight boat, which fell to Tufts by two seconds with a time of 7:27.
Mount Holyoke's first varsity four (8:52) and second novice eight (8:04) boats also faced off against the Jumbos.
The Lyons will return to action on April 14 at Lake Quinsigamond. Their opponents will be the College of the Holy Cross, Trinity College and Smith College.
Note: Mount Holyoke's first novice four boat grabbed second place with a time of 7:30 in a race on the Connecticut River yesterday. The Lyons were narrowly defeated by Amherst College (7:29) in the four-team field. Amherst's second entrant secured third place (7:47), and Franklin Pierce University finished fourth (8:04).
