Shorthanded Lyons fall at No. 11 MIT in penultimate regular-season match

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- With two players unable to compete, a shorthanded Mount Holyoke tennis team fell 9-0 at No. 11 nationally ranked MIT on Tuesday afternoon.

The host Engineers (13-3, 8-0 NEWMAC) scored two points by default, with Mount Holyoke (10-7, 4-4 NEWMAC) unable to compete at No. 3 doubles nor No. 6 singles. A third point for MIT was scored by Nishi Gandra at third singles, where Lyons first-year Rachel Allen (Mary Esther, Fla.) retired with an injury in the opening set.

MIT won 8-2 at first doubles and 8-0 at second doubles, then took first, second, fourth and fifth singles in straight sets. Junior Annika Chai (London, England) was the last player competing for the Lyons, as she battled to a 6-2, 6-1 loss against Katya Shepherd at first singles.

Mount Holyoke finishes the regular season with a home match against Clark University on Saturday at 12pm, to be played at Smith College's outdoor courts in Northampton, Mass.
