SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- The Mount Holyoke tennis team duo of first-year Rachel Allen and sophomore captain Cal Smith won one match in the C Draw of the New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament (NEWITT), hosted by the Lyons and Smith College from Friday through Sunday.

Allen (Mary Esther, Fla.) and Smith (Bridgewater, Mass.) defeated Springfield's Emma Aberle and Natalia Peyon in the first round of the tournament's C Draw, advancing to the bracket quarterfinals. The Lyon duo fell to Wheaton's Laila Hiraj and Taylor Wilson in the quarterfinals.

The tournament is scored in Fed Cup style, with teams of two playing in two singles and one doubles match per round to decide a 3-0 or 2-1 winner.

Competing for Mount Holyoke in the B Draw, junior captain Annika Chai (London, England) and sophomore Kirat Kaur (Mohali, India) advanced to the quarterfinals in a walkover before they were eliminated by Wellesley's Michel Yeo and Suzanne Xu.

Lyons sophomores Kate Vavra (Weston, Mass.) and Kennedy Bagley-Fortner (Montclair, N.J.) also competed in the C Draw, falling in the first round to Wellesley's Veda Madhusudan and Emille Pak, and then losing to Springfield's Kelly McGoldrick and Kate Rosselli in the consolation quarterfinals.
