Tennis Earns Third Place at Seven Sisters Championship

WELLESLEY, Mass. (Apr. 10, 2011) – For the second season in a row, the Mount Holyoke College women's tennis team posted a third place finish at the Seven Sisters Championship. After cruising to a 5-0 triumph over longtime rival Smith College, the Lyons fell 5-0 to Vassar College. They ended the weekend with a record of 2-2.

In the final match of the day, host Wellesley College topped Vassar College 4-1 to secure their 12th title. The Blue finished the tournament with 19 points and a 4-0 record. They have now taken top honors in six of the past seven seasons.

Vassar's 16 points were good for second place overall. Mount Holyoke (10 points), Smith (4 points) and Bryn Mawr College (1 point) rounded out the field.

The Lyons opened the day with a 5-0 victory over Smith.

Senior Elise Marifian and first year Maya Sayarath each won in straight sets in their respective singles matches. Meanwhile, sophomore Nahrhee Han prevailed 7-6 (8-6), 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (7-0) in an epic three set thriller. 

Both of Mount Holyoke's doubles entrants rolled to straight sets victories. The teams consisted of senior Natalie Hsiang and junior Sarah Moore and first year AnnElizabeth Konkel and junior Heather Richardson.

The Lyons then faced off against Vassar, falling by a score of 5-0. All five matches were decided in straight sets.

Mount Holyoke (7-11, 3-4 NEWMAC) will close out its 2010-11 campaign with home matches against Union College (10:00 a.m.) and Roger Williams University (2:00 p.m.) next Saturday.
