WORCESTER, Mass. - For the fourth straight year, Wellesley's Varsity Eight captured the NEWMAC Rowing Championship on Lake Quinsigamond. The Blue beat second place WPI in collecting their fifth overall crown at the 2014 league championship on Saturday morning.
Wellesley, who posted a time of 6:49.5, blazed past WPI, which turned in a time of 6:56.81. Simmons posted a third place finish with a time of 7:05.82) with Smith (7:08.67), Mount Holyoke (7:16.45), Coast Guard (7:17.42) and Clark (7:20.09) rounding out the field.
The Blue laid claim to the Florence Jope Smith Cup, given annually to the team with the most overall points during the four championship events The Blue also posted key points each of the other races, placing second overall in the Novice Eight (7:40.06), the Second Varsity Eight (7:16.6) and the Third Varsity Eight (7:44.04).
WPI captured victory in the Third Varsity Eight (7:40.39), while Smith were the victors in the Second Varsity Eight (7:14.3). Mount Holyoke rounded out the wins, claiming victory in the Novice Eight with a time of 7:31.0.
Following the races, the 2014 all-conference honorees were revealed. The First Team included, Wellesley's Becca Kimball (Rower of the Year), Meg Roberts and Maggie West, WPI's Brooke Cotta, Eli Boulanger and Maggie Freed, Simmons's Chelsea Foster and Jill Bolduc, along with WPI's Jessica Prashaw (Coxswain of the Year).
Named to the All-Conference Second Team was Clark's Alexandra Niclou and Larissa DiMarco, Coast Guard's Judy Hooymans and Bryanna Cooke, Mount Holyoke's Hannah Arbach and Meghan Ryan, Smith's Emma Carlisle-Reske and Missy Kubik, along with Simmons' Jessica Randolph.
