Worcester State Too Much For Basketball, 52-36

(Dec. 15, 2009) – Using a balanced scoring attack and a stingy defense, the Worcester State College women’s basketball team earned a 52-36 victory over non-conference foe Mount Holyoke College this evening at the Mildred S. Howard Gymnasium. It was the Lancers fourth straight win over the Lyons.

Seven players recorded points for Worcester State, which converted 40.4% (19-47) of its shots from the field and 90.0% (9-10) of its free throw attempts. The Lancers drained five three pointers and finished with a 40-28 edge on the glass. Sophomore guard Kaleigh Charette and junior guard Becca Giguere tallied 10 points apiece to lead the way. Worcester State also received solid production from senior forwards Reilly O’Keefe and Bri Flanders, who pulled down 10 rebounds apiece. They posted eight and six points, respectively.

Mount Holyoke struggled from the floor, making just 24.0% (12-50) of its shots. The Lyons were paced by senior guard Erin Cain, who nailed two shots from beyond the arc en route to scoring a game best 12 points. Classmate Jess Olson added seven points and eight boards from the forward position.

Worcester State scored the first four points of the contest and led 19-5 after a three pointer by junior guard Kathleen Foley midway through the opening frame. The Lancers enjoyed a 21-7 edge at the 5:28 mark, but Mount Holyoke exploded for a 13-2 run over the next four minutes to slice the deficit to 23-20. Olson and Cain sparked the spurt with five points apiece. Worcester State then closed out the frame with five consecutive points to open up a 28-20 halftime advantage. Cain led all scorers with eight points at the break. Charette had six for the guests.

The guests cruised in the second stanza, outscoring Mount Holyoke 24-16. They led by as many as 21 points (48-27) with 5:34 remaining in regulation. Giguere netted eight of her 10 points after the intermission.

Mount Holyoke (4-5, 2-2 NEWMAC) is slated to play a pair of contests at the Key Largo Classic shortly after the new year. After meeting up with Rivier College on Sunday, January 3 at 6:00 p.m., the Lyons will take on Drew University the following afternoon at 2:00 p.m. Meanwhile, Worcester State (6-4, 0-0 MASCAC) is scheduled to tour Italy for the holidays. The Lancers will play games on December 29 and 30.
