
Springfield Overpowers Basketball, 80-44
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (Feb. 11, 2009) – Three players reached double digits in the scoring column for the Springfield College women’s basketball team, which cruised to an 80-44 triumph over New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe Mount Holyoke College this evening at Blake Arena. With the win, the Pride completed the season sweep of the Lyons.
Springfield converted 51.7% (30-58) of its attempts from the field and drained six three pointers. The Pride made 82.4% (14-17) of their free throw tries and outrebounded Mount Holyoke 40-32. Their bench outscored the Lyons 31-8. Senior Corey Finch posted game highs of 18 points, five assists and five steals to lead the way. First year guard Kelly Murphy knocked down three shots from beyond the arc en route to 15 points. Meanwhile, senior center Lauren O’Connor recorded 12 points and six boards in just 19 minutes played.
Mount Holyoke was paced by junior guard Erin Cain, who racked up 16 points. It was her 13th double digit scoring effort of the season and third in a row. First years Christine Chancy and Emma Washauer chipped in with eight points apiece. Chancy dished out a team high three assists. The Lyons were limited to 29.6% (16-54) shooting from the floor and committed 19 turnovers.
Springfield (13-9, 8-2 NEWMAC) never trailed in the contest and led by as many as 38 points in the waning minutes.
The Pride scored the first eight points and took a 38-15 advantage into the locker room. Murphy led all scorers with ten points at the break. Cain had eight for Mount Holyoke.
Springfield continued to dominate in the second half. Its 76-38 edge with 4:14 remaining in regulation represented its largest lead of the night. Senior center Liz Brosseau came off the bench to collect ten points on 5-of-6 shooting in the second stanza. Cain netted nine more for the Lyons.
Mount Holyoke (6-16, 3-7 NEWMAC) will return to action on Saturday, when it visits local rival Smith College for a NEWMAC tilt beginning at 2:00 p.m. The Lyons downed the Pioneers 53-45 earlier this season.
