Basketball Downs Vassar, 47-32

(Nov. 23, 2008) - First year guard Christine Chancy racked up 12 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Mount Holyoke College women's basketball team to a 47-42 triumph over host Vassar College on the second day of the 27th Seven Sisters Classic. It was the Lyons first win of the 2008-09 campaign and third straight over the Brewers.
With its victory today, Mount Holyoke rounded out its weekend with a record of 1-1. Senior guard Katie Austen and junior guard Erin Cain were selected to the Seven Sisters All-Classic Team. In earlier action today, Wellesley College downed Agnes Scott College 78-43, and Smith College picked up a 67-54 win over Bryn Mawr College. The Blue and Pioneers both finished the weekend with 2-0 marks. Bryn Mawr and Vassar went 1-1, while Agnes Scott fell in both of its outings.
Mount Holyoke shot 31.0% (18-58) from the field and 75.0% (9-12) from the free throw line. The Lyons outrebounded Vassar 46-38 and forced 21 turnovers. Seventeen of their boards came on the offensive end of the floor. They accumulated 12 assists on 18 made baskets and tallied 22 points off turnovers.
Chancy converted 5-of-11 from the field and drilled one of Mount Holyoke's two three pointers en route to her second double-double of her brief collegiate career. The Lyons also received a boost from Cain, who totaled ten points, six rebounds and a game best five steals. Austen finished with eight points, eight rebounds (five offensive) and a game high four assists. She was a perfect 4-of-4 from the charity stripe. First year Emma Washauer chipped in with seven points.
Vassar (0-3) was limited to just 22.0% (11-50) shooting from the floor but made 72.7% (8-11) of its free throw attempts. The Brewers were paced by first year forward Kristyn Tempora, who posted a double-double on12 points and ten rebounds. Junior forward Emily Haeuser added nine points and a game best 13 boards.
The hosts jumped out to a 5-0 edge just 38 seconds into the contest and led 9-6 at the 14:23 mark. Mount Holyoke scored the next 15 points to gain control of things. The Lyons gained the lead on a layup by Cain with 13:06 remaining in the opening frame. A free throw by Washauer at the 4:36 mark put them in front 21-9, and they took a 24-11 advantage into the locker room. The Brewers made just three field goals in the first half and turned the ball over 13 times. Seven Mount Holyoke players recorded points before the break. Austen led the way with six,
Mount Holyoke maintained a double digit cushion for the remainder of the game. It started the second half on a 7-1 run to expand its lead to 31-12. The Lyons 19 point edge with 18:20 remaining in regulation was their largest of the day. Chancy tallied five points during the spurt. Vassar was able to slice the deficit to 12 points (33-21) at the 15:40 mark, but the guests scored 11 of the next 16 points to put things out of reach.
Mount Holyoke (1-3, 0-0 NEWMAC) will return to action on Tuesday, when it travels to Amherst College for a non-conference clash beginning at 7:00 p.m.
